She frowned a bit at the last part, for some reason feeling sad for the girl. The way he described her, she certainly didn’t sound like any amazing oracle. She sounded like a normal girl trying to live productively.

“She sounds like a fun girl.” Link commented after a while.

She actually wouldn’t be too opposed to meeting her some day. Perhaps she’d make the journey when she had some free time.

Mmm… she is. Right now she’s working on transformation potions. Says she wants me to help out and try a few, but… ❞ He paused, attempting to hold in a giggle. ❝ I don’t think I’d like being a rabbit or something for a couple of hours. ❞

“F-fly on broomsticks?” Her expression was one of awe. She might have been a deal more shocked, but she had grown up on a floating island, after all. This mystical ‘witch’ the boy spoke of reminded her a lot of the fortune man in the bazaar.

Looking around the area for a bit, she found herself wondering how Skyloft was doing as of late. It had been quite a while since she’d visited, as Zelda had been keeping her pretty busy with things. She decided not to dwell on it.

Crossing her arms behind her head, she laid back against the ground as well and relished in the fresh air that wafted through the trees.

“Yeah. Broomsticks. She uses this special magic her grandmother taught her. During my quest, she actually gave me rides anywhere I needed to go…” Link explained, the sounds of the birds overhead and the rustling of leaves sending him into a much calmer state.

“Her name is Irene. She’s around my age, I think. Nowadays I help her collect ingredients since her grandmother’s eyesight is going bad…"

She giggled a bit at his example, grabbing the now empty bottles and stuffing them back in her bag. “My potions come from a great potion maker in the sky,” she laughed, “Of course they’re good!”

His attitude towards the situation was calming and she found herself appreciating it. Briefly, the girl wondered if she should call her Loftwing back down to rest, but after a moment she waved the idea away. The last thing he’d probably want to see was the Loftwing right now. Or maybe he was the type to try until he got it? She didn’t know.

“I’m not entirely sure what a ‘witch’ is, but I’m sure her potions will get better over time.” She reassured, thinking about how much it would have sucked to have owned defective potions on her own adventures.

“Oh yeah, the sky…” he mused, stretching himself out on the ground. “Sounds pretty neat to live up there."

He certainly wasn’t afraid of the Loftwing, or at least at the moment. What Link was afraid of was falling again and not having a way to protect himself. He could fly again if he really desired to do so.

"Ah. A witch is… um… well, a witch is a girl or woman with magical talent. I guess the male version is a… wizard? I dunno. Anyway, witches are able to fly on broomsticks, make potions, and do all sorts of neat stuff!”

She sat up slowly, rubbing her head and smiling as widely as she could. “Ah, yeah… I’m fine. Sorry, I’m a huge idiot. I totally forgot to give you the sail..” She admitted shamefully, cringing at the new pain in her back.

The girl dug through one of the pouches lining her belt and pulled out a few heart potions. “Here,” she offered one to the boy, quickly downing the other herself.

Link frowned, not one to take self-depreciation lightly. He had already gone through a ton of trouble with letting the merchant get away with that, and that resulted in the worst emotional breakdown he had ever seen - in fact, the only one he had ever seen!

“Nah, you’re not,” he replied, taking the potion offered to him. “We all get forgetful sometimes. I remember when I forgot to wear tights one day. Let’s… say that it was breezier than normal.”

With that, he took a swig of the potion before setting the empty bottle down next to him.

“Anyway… thanks for the potion. It’s… different than what I’m used to - I get mine from one of my friends. She’s a witch in training, so sometimes her potions… don’t do the job.”

She watched as he slowly descended. At first everything seemed alright, but after a moment she wondered,  ’Why isn’t he pulling the sail out yet?’

A look of horror flashed across her face as realization seeped in. She forgot to give him the sail!!

Digging her heel back into the ground, she dashed after him as fast as she possibly could. Her legs quickly grew tired from the exertion, but there was no time to find her stamina potions. She threw her body below him, attempting to quickly wrap her arms around his torso as he landed. A loud grunt left her throat as the two crashed to the ground.

“A-ah…” Link groaned, attempting to find his sense of balance while on the ground. The one below him had broken his fall fairly well, but he was still littered with cuts and various bruises. So not the softest landing, but a safe one at least.

“Are… are you okay? I-I’m fine, but are you…?"

Link’s eyes widened a bit at the position the boy had put himself in. It might have made her giggle a bit, had she not realized he had no idea how to get back up.

“Jump!!” The girl shouted after him.

image

Jump? Wouldn’t that be the complete opposite of what he was trying to accomplish? Regardless, Link lept off of the bird, unsure of what the other was trying to do to help him…

The girl giggled at his excitement. She couldn’t quite hear what he was saying, but she had a pretty good guess. The boy was already gliding around quite swiftly, for a first time. “He’s a complete natural at this!”

Watching him and her loftwing speed through the clouds, she felt a sense of pride well up in her chest. “Good job, Link! You’re doing great so far!” She shouted through cupped hands.

Whatever she was saying, they were words of encouragement. Perhaps it was Link’s natural bravado, but he suddenly had an idea. Zooming past his ancestor, Link began to lean forward for a nosedive.

…Suddenly, he lost his grip on crimson fingers, and in seconds he found himself struggling to stay on.

“LI-LINK, WHAT DO I DO WHAT DO I DO WHAT DO I DO!” he screamed, thrashing about on the large bird. One wrong move and he would plummet to the earth below… right?

With a powerful gust of wind, the two had taken flight. She watched in awe, having always enjoyed watching her beautiful red friend flicker through the sky. And even better this time, was he wasn’t alone.

“Try leaning around and testing out which directions he’ll take you!” She bellowed after him, knowing well that he probably hadn’t heard her.

image

Link could barely hear her, but something about leaning found its way to his ears. With a nod back, the youth began to lean to the left, gasping as the Loftwing took a sharp angled dive down. He reared back up before leaning back, now shooting up even higher in the sky.

Surprisingly, he was getting the hang of it!

“Look, look!” he exclaimed to the older girl, “Look!"

She nodded enthusiastically, pointing to the belt wrapped around the bird’s chest. “Grab onto that to pull yourself up, if you need.” She smiled at the boy’s interest in flight. Most people ended up too scared to go any farther than looking at him, but Link seemed to be enjoying himself.

Her loftwing was taking to him positively, which was a pretty good sign in terms of them flying together. “Whenever you’re ready, just lean forward. He’ll fly in the direction you want him to if you direct him right. Try not to run into anything!” she giggled, remembering her own first flight. She crashed into the academy and gave the poor creature a bump on his head.

Good times.

With a nod, Link pulled his way up the crimson bird, settling in once he had grabbed a hold of several feathers. Hopefully the other Link’s Loftwing wouldn’t go mind-blowingly fast!

“All right… here goes…"

With a deep breath, he leaned forward, and…

He was off.

The Loftwing’s feathers bristled at the comment and he tapped his talons against the dirt indignantly. “As long as you’re unfamiliar with the spiral charge, you’ll probably be good. I don’t think he’d move fast enough for you to fall anyways.” The girl laughed. “He’s much more gentle than meets the eye, I promise.”

image

Spiral charge… right, that must’ve been the weird spinning thing she did earlier. Link didn’t have a clue of how to perform that stunt, so he figured that at least he’d be safe from accidentally turning upside down.

“I trust you - he looks pretty gentle,” Link mused, thinking back to all of the times he had to watch Gulley play with the animals in the forest clearing near his house. Big and small, every animal the younger boy had encountered treated him with both respect and kindness. The Loftwing had to be nothing more than a gentle giant.

“So… do I just climb on? Or…"
